Summary

Lifelines: The Literature of Women's Human Rights, 2002, held on March 25, in collaboration with The Center for Global Peace at American University, will feature readings by leading women authors of the global women's movement.

Merle Collins shares her Caribbean-inspired literature. She presents two long poems: Some Day’s Mother (a tribute to mothering) and The Lesson (set in Grenada, on a woman stepping forward). She also shares: She Was Quiet (on a Nigerian woman working in a kitchen in London), How Times Have Changed, Images (experiences of women as she saw them growing up) and When Night Falls. Throughout are themes of cultural heritage and history, loneliness, solitude, the image of women in society, and inequality at work.
