Women’s Learning Partnership (WLP) is proud to endorse the Melbourne Declaration for Gender Equality, which comes at a critical moment for the global struggle for rights, justice, and democratic participation. As civic space shrinks and inequalities deepen across regions, the Declaration offers an important call to re-center accountability, strengthen feminist movements, and ensure that the voices and priorities of those most affected by injustice shape the path forward.
We welcome the Declaration’s emphasis on the responsibility of States to respect, protect, and fulfill human rights, and its recognition that vibrant, locally rooted civil society is essential to holding power to account. At a time when the gender equality ecosystem is increasingly fragmented and under strain, this call to realign efforts around justice, solidarity, and public accountability is both timely and necessary.
At the same time, WLP’s work is grounded in the understanding that accountability and reform do not happen in isolation. Sustainable progress depends on the strength of the movements, leadership, and civic relationships that make change possible, and ensure it endures. Across our transnational partnership, WLP invests in feminist leadership, intergenerational collaboration, and locally rooted strategies that enable women and communities to exercise collective power in shaping their societies.
By endorsing the Melbourne Declaration, WLP joins a global community committed to advancing gender equality through both institutional accountability and people-centered change. We see our role as helping to build the conditions under which the Declaration’s vision can be realized in practice – across diverse and often constrained political contexts.
