Uzbek men are interviewed in the documentary; they claim that this was false, and that the government was retaliating for their development of the area and creation of jobs. Over 5,000 people were arrested and lost their jobs. Widespread protests ensued. What started out as a peaceful demonstration quickly escalated to violence;  the Uzbek government started attacking its own citizens, many of them children and women. Residents of Andijan fled to Kyrgyzstan for safety.
