This session at the 2004 MESA Conference will focus on the status of women in a fast changing world, and will discuss the challenges presented by the new technological, economic, cultural, and political realities that mark our globalized world.

These phenomena include neoliberal economics, developments in biotechnology, the neoconservative backlash against women’s rights, monopolistic ownership patterns over information technologies that exclude women, fundamentalisms of various kinds and the rise of identity politics that subordinate or marginalize women’s issues, and the increase in violent conflict and war.

Speakers will suggest strategies for the women’s movements that take into account future trends in the global situation. The objective is to develop more effective strategies to assist the ongoing work of women’s movements in advancing gender equality, women’s human rights and sustainable human development.

Alda Facio, Joanna Kerr, and Geetanjali Misra join Mahnaz Afkhami as panelists.
