About the Interviewee*
Soraida Abed Hussein (Palestine), General Director of the Women’s Affairs Technical Committee (WATC), is a long time women’s rights activist. She was one of the co-founders of the Women's Center for Legal Aid and Counseling, heading its Research, Documentation, and Advocacy Units. Currently, she is a board member for the Palestinian Al-Kamanjati Musical Institution, and an assembly member of Women and Family Affairs Center based in Nablus.
In collaboration with academics and Cardiff University, she prepared undergraduate curriculum for the class, ‘Law and Women in Palestine’ at Palestine’s Al-Najah University. She holds a M.A. in Law in Development from Warwick University, UK. Born in Colombia, Hussein, is fluent in Arabic, English, and Spanish, has published articles about women, and is known as an expert trainer in the field. In 2004, the Canadian Board of Films produced the movie, Soraida: A Woman of Palestine, which documented her personal and public struggles as a Palestinian woman living under occupation.
