In 1996 Sisterhood is Global Institute (SIGI) hosted a forum called Beijing and Beyond, drawing Muslim women scholars and activists from all over the world to discuss the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action. Following the forum, a small group of women leaders gathered for an in-depth discussion about the cultural and historical roles of women in Muslim majority societies.
A documentary released in the year 2000 about contemporary post-revolutionary Iranian society seen through the lens of CNN journalist and Iranian native Christiane Amanpour, who left Iran in 1980 in the wake of the so-called "Islamic Revolution" of 1979. The documentary centers on conflicts between cultural conservatives and reformers, Iranian President Mohammad Khatami's reformist agenda, and the future of Iranian society.
The calls for women’s human rights in Iran and Afghanistan require coordinated action by the international community. On March 10, as part of the UN Commission on the Status of Women NGO Forum, WLP will brought together Iranian and Afghan women leaders to share ways to assist movements for women’s rights inside and outside the countries.
