Lifelines: The Literature of Women's Human Rights, 2002, held on March 25, in collaboration with The Center for Global Peace at American University, features readings by leading women authors of the global women's movement.

Elizabeth Alexander presents works from Venus Hottentot. Two poems reveal the life of a Cape Town woman, lured to London under false circumstances, and placed on exhibition for her ‘unique’ genitals and buttocks. The first poem is from the perspective of the scientist who was charged with studying her anatomy; the second poem is from the voice of the woman. Other poems read include: Robeson at Rutgers, Antebellum Dream Book, Gravitas, Crash, War, Peccant, Postpartum Dream #8, and Visitation.
