Summary

This video features the second panel from WLP's The World We Seek: Reigniting the Dialogue on Human Security conference.

WLP executive director, Lina Abou Habib, asks panelists to share their thoughts on the film. Panelists discuss the dichotomy between national and human security in the post-9/11 world and how governments have sacrificed the latter for the former, citing examples of this problem in their respective countries. 

To address these violations, a new generation of human rights activists have allied with other people of the world who suffer under the same systems that uphold global inequality. Panelists cite opposition movements that are inclusive and emphasize the well-being of all individuals in order to ensure security. Barbara Phillips described the Black Lives Matter movement as one that exemplifies this strategy and the perspective that "injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere."

Ann Mayer notes that challenges to female empowerment are posed by the lack of access to basic facilities, namely toilets and sanitation facilities. This problem puts them at greater risk of gender-based violence and also prevents them from accessing opportunities to learn and work. Mayer explained, “Security broadly conceived encompasses quality of life and safety in day to day functions.”
