Summary
In August 2024, Bir Duino visited disaster-affected communities in Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul region to assess the impact of devastating mudflows and gather insights from the "View From the Frontline" project, conducted in collaboration with the Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Reduction.
With Central Asia, including Kyrgyzstan, reeling from unprecedented floods in 2024, Bir Duino aimed to evaluate the region's needs and identify solutions to mitigate future disasters. The organization met with local leaders, activists, and authorities to address critical challenges, such as the destruction of homes, schools, and infrastructure, as well as the loss of lives and livelihoods.
Mudflows are on the rise, putting thousands of families and key infrastructure at risk. Experts estimate that 55,000 homes and over 150 schools lie in danger zones. In 2024 alone, mudflows claimed over 20 lives and caused damages worth one billion Kyrgyz soms.
Bir Duino emphasizes the urgency of starting a multilateral partnership between the government, business community, and civil society for the security and development of Kyrgyzstan and for continued collaboration with communities, monitoring government actions, and amplifying the voices of local leaders living in disaster-prone areas to decision-makers.
